The calculations on this site are arithmetic aids, and every material figure in them is a typical value — the supplier's scale ticket is the number that counts. Please read the specific points below before ordering gravel based on anything published here.

Densities vary by supplier

Our density table lists industry-typical values — pea gravel ≈1.4, #57 ≈1.4, #411 ≈1.5, crusher run ≈1.6, river rock ≈1.35, decomposed granite ≈1.4 and lava rock ≈0.7 short tons per cubic yard — and actual weights vary with stone source, gradation, and moisture. A wet, fines-heavy load can weigh several percent more than the same volume dry. Ton and bag results from the calculator are therefore estimates: confirm the exact load weight and volume with your supplier before finalizing any order.

Prices are regional estimates

All cost figures on this site — including the per-ton and per-yard ranges in our price guide — are typical published ranges for the United States, not quotes. Real prices vary substantially by region, stone availability, haul distance and order size, and they change over time. Always obtain current local quotes before budgeting or purchasing.

Not engineering advice

Nothing here is a substitute for a qualified professional evaluating your actual site, soil, drainage, and loads. Depth recommendations are typical residential practice, not specifications for your subgrade, frost conditions, or building code. For driveways carrying heavy vehicles, drainage problems affecting structures, or anything structural, consult a local contractor or engineer.

Accuracy and use at your own risk

The calculator's output is only as good as its inputs, and errors in measurement or material selection propagate directly into the results. We work to keep formulas and tables correct — methodology is published in full so anyone can check our work — but the site is provided as-is, without warranty of any kind. You bear responsibility for verifying quantities before purchase and for the outcome of any project built using this information. See also our terms of use.
